Visit Latgale Region

Latgale is the easternmost region of Latvia, bordered by Belarus and Russia. It is known for its pristine nature, including rivers and lakes, making it a great destination for outdoor activities such as hiking and swimming. The region's culture is also unique due to its history as part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th century.

A must-see for any visitor to Latgale are the Daugavpils Fortress and Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre. The fortress was built in 1810 during Napoleonic wars by Tsar Alexander I and served as a military base until World War II, eventually becoming a museum in 1959. The art centre houses an impressive range of modernist works from iconic artist Mark Rothko.

No visit would be complete without experiencing one of Latgale's culinary specialties - sakotis cake, which was supposedly created here during 18th century peasant parties!
