Visit Zemgale Region

The Zemgale Region of Latvia is a picturesque province in the east of the country. It is known for its rolling hills, forests and lakes. The region has a long history stretching back to ancient Latvian times, when it was part of an important medieval trading route between Lithuania and Russia.

The capital city of Jelgava is one of the highlights of the region, with its baroque architecture and historic castle. Rundale Palace is another interesting destination, located just outside Jelgava; it was once home to Duke Ernst Johann von Biron. There are also plenty of nature attractions in Zemgale, such as scenic Lake Lubans or Aizkraukle Nature Park which offers hiking trails through forests and wetlands.

An interesting historical fact about Zemgale Region is that it was one of two provinces created by Polish King Wladyslaw IV Vasa when he subdued the area in 1629-1631 during what became known as 'The Polish-Swedish War'. The other province was Kurzeme (Courland).
