The Akkar Governorate of Lebanon is a rugged, mountainous region located in the north-east of the country. Although remote and sparsely populated, it is an important region for both its culture and its resources. Its historic towns and villages are rich with archaeological sites to explore, including Roman ruins and Crusader castles. The Citadel of Amioun is one of the most impressive historical sites in Akkar; it was built over 2000 years ago by Greeks on top of an earlier Phoenician fortress.

Akkar's natural beauty also draws tourists - visitors can enjoy trekking in the mountains or exploring wildlife reserves full of diverse fauna. There are several beaches along the Mediterranean coastline that offer stunning views as well as excellent opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing and boat rides.

One interesting historical fact about Akkar is that it was home to many early Christian communities since at least the Early Middle Ages, when some historians believe it became part of the Byzantine Empire. It has since become a religiously diverse area with Muslims making up more than half of its population today.
