Visit Butha-Buthe District


Butha-Buthe is a district located in the Northern part of Lesotho, and is known for its rugged mountain terrain. The area offers plenty to explore including breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape as well as some interesting historical sites.

One must-see attraction in Butha-Buthe is the Kome Cave, an ancient underground chamber with interesting rock formations that were once used as a hideout by bandits. Another highlight of the district is Thaba Bosiu, an iconic flat-topped mountain that was once home to King Moshoeshoe I and currently serves as one of Lesotho's main tourist attractions.

Historically, Butha-Buthe District has been under constant threat from invaders since its establishment in 1865. During this time it served as a stronghold where Chief Matsepane defended his kingdom against colonial forces led by white settlers from South Africa. Today it stands proudly as one of Lesotho's ten districts and continues to attract tourists from around the world who come to experience its unique culture and beauty.
