Visit Maseru District

Maseru District is the capital of Lesotho and is located in the northwest of the country. It has a population of
over 500,000 people. Its proximity to South Africa makes it an ideal base for exploring both countries. The city
has a diverse landscape with mountains, valleys, and rivers creating a beautiful backdrop to explore.

Some of the tourist attractions include Thaba Bosiu National Monument which is said to be where King Moshoeshoe I,
founder of Lesotho built his mountain stronghold in 1824 as well as Mohale Dam which was constructed between 1998-2003
and provides water for many areas of Lesotho including Maseru District. The city also hosts several cultural events each year such as Morija Arts & Cultural Festival and Setsoto Music Festival.

Maseru District also has some important historical significance due to it being one of the few places in southern Africa that was not colonized by Europeans during the 19th century. This enabled Chief Moshoeshoe I to negotiate favorable terms with British colonialists without losing control over his own country's independence resulting in Lesotho becoming independent from Great Britain in 1966!
