Visit Gbarpolu

The Gbarpolu are an indigenous ethnic group of Liberia located mainly in the Gbarpolu County. They rely heavily on subsistence farming to meet their needs. Their language is Mano, and most of the population is Christian.

The region offers a unique way for visitors to experience Liberian culture and nature, as well as some stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The Tomba National Forest Reserve - home to a large variety of wildlife including monkeys and elephants - is one must-see attraction, where you can also visit local villages and observe traditional rituals such as dances. For history buffs, there's also the Old Towne Museum in Bopolu which displays artifacts from pre-colonial times.

An interesting historical fact about Gbarpolu relates to slavery: It was here that freed African American slaves settled after being granted their freedom at the end of the 19th century by King Tom Wleh III of Gbapo (now known as Tubmanburg). These former slaves became known as Americo-Liberians, forming what would become one of Liberia's largest ethnic groups today.
