Visit Gbarpolu County

Gbarpolu County is a county located in northwest Liberia, and is one of the fifteen counties that constitute the nation. Gbapolu has borders to Bomi County in the east, Grand Cape Mount and Lofa County in the south, Bong and Nimba County to the west, and Guinea to the north. The county has an estimated population of over 96 thousand people.

The capital city of Gbarpolu is Bopolu City, located on its western edge along with many other small towns throughout this rural region. Tourists can visit Kpo Mountain National Park which provides breathtaking views from its peaks or head to Lorma Village where they may learn about the local culture while staying with a host family during their stay.

The people of Gbarpolu are known for their resilience having survived a long civil war period in Liberia which was characterized by extreme violence and bloodshed. One interesting historical fact about Gbapolu is that it was first established as a district within Grand Cape Mount before it became an independent county in 1984 under President Samuel Doe's administration and was later formed into its current configuration after Doe's rule ended in 1996.
