Visit Az Zāwiyah

The Az Zawiyah of Libya is an ancient city located in the west of the country. It is one of the most historically significant sites in Libya, and home to many archaeological sites. The city has been inhabited since at least the 5th century BC and was a major trading post for local tribes, as well as for caravans travelling between Egypt and Tunisia.

Az Zawiyah is home to a number of interesting tourist attractions, including the 11th century Great Mosque which was built on top of a Roman temple. To get a feel for traditional Libyan culture, visitors can explore Souk al-Ahad - an old market place that has been operating since at least 1200 AD. The nearby Byzantine ruins are also worth exploring, as well as several ancient graveyards that can be found throughout the city.

An interesting historical fact about Az Zawiyah is its unique role during World War II; it was chosen by British forces to serve as their base in western Libya due to its natural defensive position amongst surrounding hills and valleys. Today, this area remains an important part of Libyan history and culture which visitors can appreciate while exploring all that Az Zawiyah has to offer.
