Visit Surt


The Surt of Libya is a coastal city located in northwestern Libya, near the Mediterranean Sea. Home to around 130,000 people, it is one of the most populous cities in the country and has served as an important economic and cultural center since ancient times.

Surt is known for its beaches and ancient ruins including Cyrene, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once one of the most powerful Greek cities in Africa. Another popular tourist destination is Apollonia which was founded by Greeks from Cyrene in 600 BC and contains some of the oldest Greek ruins on the African continent.

Surt has a rich history that dates back to antiquity and has been conquered by many different civilizations over the centuries including Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Ottomans. It also served as an important strategic outpost for General Erwin Rommel during World War II when he briefly held control over Surt during his North African campaign.

For those interested in exploring Libyan culture, there are plenty of interesting sites to explore in Surt including mosques, churches, markets and traditional souks where visitors can find unique handmade crafts. The city also offers plenty of opportunities to sample local cuisine or relax on its many beaches.
