Visit Mauren

The Mauren of Liechtenstein is an ethnic group residing in the principality of Liechtenstein. They are descendants of Alemannic-speaking Swiss immigrants who arrived during the Middle Ages and have since become a distinct cultural group. The Mauren speak both German and a dialect of Alemannic called Maurenerisch, and they practice both Roman Catholicism and Protestantism.

A popular tourist destination in the area is the ruins of Neu-Ramsau, a medieval castle built around 1250 AD by one of the original Swiss settlers. It is open to visitors all year round. Another sight to see is Gutenberg Castle, which offers spectacular views over Vaduz, Liechtenstein's capital city, as well as its surrounding mountains and valleys.

An interesting historical fact about the Mauren people is that their ancestry goes all the way back to Charlemagne, who ruled over much of Western Europe in 800AD. This makes them one of Europe's oldest ethnic groups!
