Visit Blantyre District

The Blantyre District of Malawi is a vibrant region full of culture, history and diverse landscapes. Many tourists come to the area to experience its unique atmosphere.

The city of Blantyre is the country's commercial hub, offering plenty of cultural attractions like the Malawi National Museum and Chichiri Shopping Mall. For nature-lovers there's Mt Mulanje Nature Reserve, known for its varied wildlife species and breathtaking views from Sapitwa Peak. The nearby Liwonde National Park also has great opportunities for game viewing in a stunning setting on the banks of Shire River.

Adding to its historical significance, Blantyre was once known as 'the garden city' because it had never been colonised by Europeans unlike other areas in southern Africa during colonial times. It was declared a district in 1958 when it became part of newly independent Malawi and today it serves as an important business centre for trade with neighbouring countries like Mozambique and Zambia.
