Visit Chitipa district


Chitipa is a district located in the Northern Region of Malawi, bordering Tanzania. It is a rural area that boasts an abundance of natural beauty and wildlife, making it a popular tourist destination for nature lovers. Popular attractions include the Nyika National Park, offering miles of rolling hills and valleys as well as rich flora and fauna. The Chitipa Gap, where two rivers meet at the border with Tanzania is also worth visiting.

Historically, Chitipa was part of the traditional homeland of the Tumbuka people. In 1891, Chief Mwase Kasungu declared independence from Britain's control over his land which marked the beginning of British rule in Chitipa until 1964 when Malawi gained independence from Britain. Today there are several monuments to commemorate this history including Chief Mwase Kasungu's grave site which has become an important stop for tourists interested in learning about Chitipa's past.
