Visit Dedza


Dedza is a district in Central Malawi and the largest administrative division in the country. Located just southeast of Lake Malawi, it covers an area of about 4,541 km2. It is home to a diverse population with many ethnic groups living together harmoniously.

The Dedza region offers visitors plenty to do and see including the historic Mkondezi Monoliths, which are ancient burial stones situated at Chilunga Hill near Salima town, as well as the stunning Dzalanyama Forest Reserve with its diverse wildlife and plant life. Visitors can also enjoy exploring Dedza Pottery Centre where they can purchase handmade pottery from local artisans.

One interesting historical fact about Dedza is that it was once part of infamous Maravi Empire - one of the most powerful African empires during 16th century - before being annexed by British colonialists in 1891. The Maravi kingdoms were renowned for their extensive trading networks connecting Africa with India and Arabia among other regions around world even before arrival of European traders and colonists on continent.
