Visit Dowa

The Dowa district is located in the Central Region of Malawi. The region's population is made up of many different ethnic groups, most notably the Chewa and Ngoni. The region has traditionally been an agricultural area, growing maize, tobacco and groundnuts.

One popular tourist destination in Dowa is Mzimba Mountain; visitors can enjoy spectacular views from the peak of this mountain which overlooks the Lyambai plains and surrounding rivers. Another interesting point of interest is Lumbadzi Prison Museum; once a British prison holding political prisoners during colonial rule, it now serves as a museum for local history.

An interesting historical fact about Dowa is that it was among one of the major areas where mission churches were established in Malawi by European missionaries early on in its post-colonial history. Today there are numerous churches throughout the district as well as other tourist attractions such as traditional villages, monuments and markets to explore.
