Kasungu district's history goes back centuries when it was originally inhabited by Chewa tribal people who were later joined by immigrants from Mozambique and Tanzania in the 19th century introducing new cultures to the area. Today these different cultures are still evident with traditional ceremonies taking place throughout the year such as Kuimba kra Mzimu - an annual event where spiritualists gather together to perform rituals at sacred sites near lakes or rivers to bring good luck for the coming year.
