Visit Lilongwe District

Lilongwe is the capital city of Malawi and its most populous district. Located in the central region of Malawi, it's a vibrant city with plenty to explore. Among the attractions are Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary which offers a chance to spot some of Malawi's native animals such as antelopes, monkeys, and many species of birds; or you can visit Kumbali Cultural Village to experience traditional dance performances and puppet shows. Additionally, there are many markets around town selling local crafts and souvenirs to take home.

Aside from its natural beauty and cultural attractions, Lilongwe also boasts an interesting history. In 1891, British missionaries established a trading post in what was then known as Fort Lister - today part of Area 6 in North East Lilongwe - making it one of the oldest settlements in modern-day Malawi. Even today parts of Old Town remain an important historical site for locals as it marks where Traditional Authority Kalolo once held his court during colonial times in 1909.
