Visit Mangochi

Mangochi is a district in the southern region of Malawi. It lies between Lake Malawi and the Shire River, giving it a unique lake-river environment. Mangochi is known for its vibrant tourist industry with activities such as swimming, fishing, boating, snorkeling, and birdwatching all being popular activities. The most popular tourist destination in Mangochi is Mumbo Island where visitors can explore the abundant wildlife or stay overnight in one of the luxury lodges available onsite. For those who prefer to stay on land, Makokola Retreat offers beautiful beachside bungalows just outside Mangochi town.

The area has a rich history stretching back to pre-colonial times when it was an important trading post along the main route from Mozambique to Lake Malawi. During World War II, British troops stationed at nearby Mlanje Mountain used Mangochi as their base camp while they fought battles against German forces in Mozambique and Tanzania. Today visitors can still visit these historic sites including Mlanje Mountain which offers spectacular views of both Lake Malawi and Shire River valleys.
