Visit Thyolo

Thyolo is a region in the southern part of Malawi on the border with Mozambique. The landscape is dominated by lush mountain ranges, tea and coffee plantations, and vast tracts of subtropical lowland forests. It's an ideal destination for nature lovers as it boasts incredible biodiversity and breathtaking views from its highest peaks. Amongst other attractions, Thyolo offers rich cultural experiences; traditional markets, local cuisine, ancestral customs and stories to explore.

Two places worth visiting are Mulanje Mountain (the highest peak in Malawi) where visitors can experience spectacular views or take on a challenging trekking tour; and Mua Mission where guided tours through the original African villages provide an interesting insight into African history and culture.

Fascinatingly, Thyolo was home to one of Africa's oldest railways called 'Narrow Gauge' (built in 1897). This pioneering railway transported goods from tea estates to major ports such as Blantyre before being replaced by roads in 1965.
