Visit Laamu Atoll

The Laamu Atoll is an administrative atoll located in the south of the Maldives. It is part of the Huvadu administrative division, and consists of a number of islands including Gan, Maalhendhoo, Kadhdhoo and Fonadhoo.

The region is renowned for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters which provide ideal conditions for snorkelling and diving. On land there are local attractions such as mangroves, dense vegetation and coconut plantations which make for great nature walks.

Two must-visit locations in Laamu Atoll are Huravalhi Island Resort, where you can stay among lush tropical gardens with easy access to nearby coral reefs, or Maalhendhoo Island for a peaceful beach getaway away from crowds.

Historically speaking, Laamu has been inhabited since ancient times when Buddhism was introduced to the region by wealthy merchants travelling through South Asia in search of spices. In more recent days it was popularly used as an area for pearl fishing until it became part of the Maldivian nation in 1972 under their independence from Britain.
