Visit South Province

The South Province of the Maldives is situated in the southernmost part of the island nation. This paradise destination boasts some stunnning white beaches, crystal clear waters with plenty of marine life and lush green vegetation. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this region due to its incredible beauty and scenery.

Two noteworthy places to visit are Addu City and Laamu Atoll, both situated within this province. Addu City, also known as Seenu Atoll, was once an important British military base which can be explored via boat tours or on foot. The town offers plenty for tourists from historical sights to cultural attractions such as mosques and markets. Laamu Atoll is a beautiful collection of small islands where visitors can snorkel or dive amidst colourful coral reefs teeming with sea life while exploring amazing lagoons such as Foahmuhdhoo Kalhu Lagoon and Kilhi Koadhoo Lagoon.

In 1989 a significant event took place in South Province - it became home to the Maldives' first democratically elected president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who served for 30 years until 2008! This historical fact makes the South Province an interesting area to explore further!
