Visit Vaavu Atoll

Vaavu Atoll, located in the Republic of Maldives, is an idyllic paradise that has been unexplored for centuries. This gem of an atoll is often referred to as Felidu Atoll by the locals and boasts some of the most pristine coral reefs in the world. Vaavu Atoll is known for its abundant marine life and boasts a wide variety of tropical fish, manta rays, sharks and turtles.

The region has many beautiful beaches with white sand that stretches along its shoreline making it an ideal destination for swimming and snorkeling activities. Tourists looking to explore Vaavu can visit two main sites: Lonubo Island to observe sea turtles nesting or visit Maadhoo Island where they can witness one of nature's greatest spectacles: whale shark aggregation.

One interesting historical fact about this atoll is that it was first mentioned in records from 15th century Chinese traders who referred to Vaavu as 'Folhulhudheli' which means 'where Buddha descended into Hell'. Later on when Vasco da Gama discovered Maldives he decided to name this small island group after one of his shipmates - Pedro de Avila - hence the name Avilla (now known as Vaavu).
