Gao is a region in the northeast corner of Mali, located on the Niger River along the border with Niger and Algeria. The capital city of Gao is also called Gao, and this is where many visitors go to experience traditional African culture. Tourists can explore historical monuments such as the 19th-century Grand Mosque or take part in local traditions such as animal markets or fishing on the river. Other attractions include sites like Bamba Djon Fango, an earthen fortress that was once home to a powerful pre-Islamic kingdom.

For those wanting a more hands-on cultural experience, there are several places to sample delicious local cuisine such as "Sadio" (a millet soup) or Fula (a peanut stew). Nature lovers will also find plenty of opportunities for birding and wildlife viewing in nearby parks and nature reserves like W National Park.

The region has an interesting history too; it was one of the major sites for resistance against French colonial rule during World War II when peasants joined forces with soldiers from neighboring countries to fight off French forces at Kati Thiamboulou. Today visitors can still explore this important historical site which is now open to tourists from around the world.
