Visit Ménaka

Ménaka

The Menaka region (also known as Gao Region) of Mali is a stunning, sparsely populated expanse of deserts and savannah lying in the central-eastern part of the country. Due to its remoteness, this region remains largely untouched by modernity. Tourists can explore a variety of fascinating sites and activities here, such as visiting the bustling markets in Ansongo or trekking up to Mount Toussako. The latter is especially popular for its spiritual significance to the local Tuareg people who believe it was once home to their gods. The nearby village of Tabankort holds an important place in Malian history as it's where French forces led by Captain Marchand were forced to surrender following a battle against Tuareg rebels during 1898 - thus leading to the end of French colonial rule over Mali. Aside from these historical attractions, visitors should be sure check out Bandiagara Cliffs - made famous for being featured in various Hollywood films - and take part in night-time camel rides near Lake Aoukar for some truly unforgettable experiences!
