Visit Mopti

Mopti is a vibrant city located in central Mali, at the confluence of the Niger and Bani Rivers. The city is home to a unique blend of ethnicities and cultures, with its population made up of Songhai, Bambara, Bobo, Bozo and Dogon people. The ancient town of Djenne is one of Mopti's top tourist attractions. This mud-brick Swahili trading center is an UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its grand mosque built in 1907 with traditional techniques. Another interesting fact about Mopti is that it served as an important port during the French colonial period when it was known as 'Port de Sable'. It was here that explorers like Rene Caillie set off on their journey to Timbuktu in 1828 - an extraordinary feat which earned him recognition as the first European to reach Timbuktu alive!
