Visit Northern Region

The Northern Region of Malta is the most densely populated and urbanised area of the country. Home to the capital city Valletta, it offers a range of attractions for visitors to explore. Tourists can visit St. Paul's Cathedral, a beautiful baroque church built in 1697 as well as The Grand Harbour, an impressive natural harbour that has long served as an important naval port.

The region also boasts many historical sites such as La Valette Palace, built in 1566 and home to seven Grand Masters of the Order of St John during the Knights' rule in Malta. A visit to Mdina, 'the silent city' is also highly recommended; this ancient walled city is known for its picturesque buildings and narrow cobbled streets that evoke a bygone era.

Malta's Northern Region also offers plenty of opportunities for nature lovers with its expansive beaches and several popular diving spots such as Gnejna Bay and Exiles Beach (San Blas). An interesting historical fact about this region is that it was the site where European nations signed one of history's most decisive peace treaties - The Treaty of Paris - which ended almost 1000 years of warfare between France and England in 1259.
