Visit Brakna Region

The Brakna Region of Mauritania is a culturally-rich area in the southwest of the country. It lies on the Atlantic Coast and is bordered by Senegal to the south. Its capital, Aioun El Atrouss, is an important city that serves as a gateway to sub-Saharan Africa.

Brakna offers tourists a diverse range of attractions including its elegant colonial towns, palm tree plantations and fishing villages filled with ancient ruins and bustling markets. Popular sites include Ouadane, an old caravan town standing in stark contrast to its modern surroundings; and Boutilimit, a traditional Saharan town well known for its religious shrines and traditional mud buildings.

Historically, Brakna was an important trade center along the Trans-Saharan Trade Route linking North African countries with Sub-Saharan regions during medieval times. From within this region came some fierce warriors who waged battles against their adversaries from other regions such as Senegal during pre-colonial period which resulted in remarkable bravery campaigns being remembered even today among locals through music festivals and dances held annually especially during "Guelwar" season.
