Visit Gorgol Region


The Gorgol Region of Mauritania is a beautiful area with vast desert landscapes, lush vegetation, and a wealth of cultural attractions to explore. Located in the southwestern portion of the country, the Gorgol Region is known for its traditional villages and vibrant markets. Its capital city, Kaedi, has mosques and fortifications that are centuries old testifying to its long history as a camel-trading center.

The charming village of Boutilimit is one place not to be missed - offering unique insight into traditional Mauritanian architecture with homes built from mud brick and palm mats. The nearby Parc National de Diawling teems with wildlife including antelope, gazelles and several species of birds making it an ideal spot for birdwatchers.

Historically significant sites include Fort Arguin which was key in defending against Portuguese incursions in the 16th century as well as being home to French colonial troops until 1905. Additionally, travelers can visit several ancient Berber cemeteries at places such as Djarallia, Kankossa and Aleg which gives an interesting perspective on local customs around death rituals going back centuries.
