Visit Hodh Ech Chargui Region


The Hodh Ech Chargui Region is located in the southeast of Mauritania. It covers an area of 77,760 square kilometers and is the largest administrative region in the country. It is home to two ethnic groups: Soninke and Fulani. Tourism in this region includes visiting the Terjit oasis, which contains a few natural springs and archaeological sites; or Fassala National Park, where visitors can observe several wildlife species such as oryx, gazelles, hartebeests and ostriches.

One interesting historical fact about Hodh Ech Chargui Region was that it was once part of the Ghana Empire during its heyday from 800-1235 CE. Its inhabitants are said to have built enormous fortified structures which are still visible today to mark their political boundaries. Additionally, there are other ancient sites like Gadiaga which were once important trading posts used by merchants coming down from North Africa to trade with people living around Senegal River Valley centuries ago.
