Visit Hodh el Gharbi

Hodh el Gharbi is a region and province in the southeast corner of Mauritania. It's home to a number of bird species, including the endangered African Darter, as well as diverse mammals such as Dorcas Gazelles and Water Monitors. The area features stunning sand dunes and salt flats, which attract both tourists and photographers alike.

The town of Aioun is one popular tourist spot, located on the edge of an impressive oasis with lush palm groves filled with songbirds. Here visitors can visit mosques like the Sidi Mahfoud Mosque or check out traditional local markets for handmade crafts. Another place to visit is Terjit, where you'll find ancient ruins set amongst acacia trees and rock cliffs leading down to a large crater lake at its bottom.

An interesting historical fact about this region is that it was once part of a kingdom called Takrur, which dates back to 600 AD. This kingdom was then conquered by medieval Ghanaian kings who built several mosques throughout their rule here before they were eventually overthrown in 1076 AD by neighbouring Sosso warriors led by Sumanguru Kante.
