Visit Inchiri Region

The Inchiri Region of Mauritania is a semi-arid region in the northwest of the country, just south of Morocco. It is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, with many sites to explore such as Fort Mogador and Bou Craa mine. The area provides stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and is home to a number of nomadic tribes who keep centuries old customs alive. Visitors can admire colorful handicrafts such as basket weaving, pottery, jewelry making and leatherwork while partaking in traditional festivals like Islamic holidays and weddings that highlight the region's culture.

When exploring Inchiri Region, be sure to visit some popular tourist attractions such as Chinguetti Mosque--one of two mosques listed on UNESCO's World Heritage list--which dates back to 1204 A.D., or view ancient rock carvings at Oued el-Atteuf which show evidence of human inhabitants from over 10 thousand years ago. An interesting historical fact about this region is that it was once home to wild camels up until 1958 when they were eradicated by French military during an attempted revolt against their colonial rule.
