Visit Nouakchott-Nord Region

Nouakchott-Nord is a region located in western Mauritania. It is the most densely populated part of the country, with many of its inhabitants living in the capital city of Nouakchott. The region has an array of attractions and activities, from beaches to cultural sights to historical sites. In Nouakchott itself, visitors can take a stroll along Avenue de France or explore ancient buildings such as the Grand Mosque and Maison des esclaves. North of Nouakchott lies Potou, where one can visit traditional Mauritanian villages as well as an old royal palace called El Riadh Fort (also known as Forte du Sud). Tourists should also check out Ouadane, an ancient city with a long history dating back to 7th century BC; it was once an important trading post for gold and slaves between Timbuktu and Morocco. An interesting fact about this region is that it is home to one of Mauritania's oldest cities--Kiffa--which dates back more than 1500 years!
