Visit Nouakchott-Sud Region

The Nouakchott-Sud Region is located on the Atlantic coast of Mauritania, near the country's capital city of Nouakchott. It is known mainly for its beautiful beaches, sand dunes and desert regions. Tourists can explore the coastal town of Maghama or visit Lac Rose Cheref, a beautiful pink lake located in the region. Maghama also provides tourists with ideal opportunities to experience some local culture and learn more about traditional Mauritanian lifestyles.

The region has a rich history that dates back to pre-colonial times when it was occupied by various Berber tribes as well as merchants coming from North Africa and Europe. During colonial times, this area became a place of commerce for fishermen from Spain who were here hunting tuna in large numbers for export to Europe. More recently, during World War II this region served as an important site for British anti- submarine operations against German U-boats operating in the Atlantic Ocean.

One thing not to be missed while visiting Nouakchott-Sud Region is the ancient city ruins located near Chinguetti which are said to date back to before 1000 AD and contain many ancient manuscripts that are still being studied today by historians and archaeologists alike!
