Visit Tiris Zemmour Region

The Tiris Zemmour Region is located in the north of Mauritania and is one of its two desert regions. It covers a large area of 50,700 square kilometers and is extremely arid, with temperatures ranging from 48degC in summer to 3degC in winter. The region has many tourist attractions, like the Chinguetti Mosque, one of the oldest Islamic buildings in Mauritania, or Oualata - an ancient city founded by Arab nomads which still contains remains from centuries past. For nature lovers there are also a number of amazing animal reserves such as Banc d'Arguin National Park where you can spot migratory birds and some rare species like the Saharan cheetah. An interesting historical fact about this region is that during World War II it was a site for Allied forces who used it as a base for their operations against Nazi-controlled North Africa.
