Visit Trarza Region

Trarza, situated in the west of Mauritania, is one of the largest regions in the country. It is renowned for its vast landscapes and natural beauty, including its lagoons and wetlands. The region's capital city, Moudjeria acts as an important hub for trade and business. It also has some excellent tourist attractions such as St. Louis Island - a former French colonial trading post - and birdwatching opportunities at Mekheirichuchar Reserve.

Trarza's rich history can be traced back to medieval times when it was ruled by powerful kings from the Maure dynasty who built impressive fortresses throughout the area to protect their kingdom from invaders. One of these historic sites is Ghall-Lahguiat fortress which dates back to 1325 AD. Today this fortress stands proudly on a hill overlooking Trarza's lush pastureland below with views stretching out towards Senegal in the distance.

This fascinating region also offers visitors plenty of activities such as camel riding, fishing excursions through scenic mangrove forests or simply taking time out to explore Moudjeria's bustling markets and souks - where you can sample authentic Mauritanian cuisine or pick up some traditional arts and crafts souvenirs!
