Park multiple days

Ölgii, Bayan-Ölgii Province, Mongolia
Services:

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is located in Mongolia and is home to some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. This national park features soaring snowcapped peaks, alpine lakes, and glaciers that stretch from Russia to China. Visitors can explore an array of wildlife species including argali wild sheep and ibex on their journey through the park.

Travelers can take a two-day horseback ride along the shores of Lake Khoton, or hike to the summit of Khuiten peak (4374 m). There are also opportunities for boating excursions across tranquil mountain lakes and birdwatching along crystal clear rivers. With its stunning landscape, diverse wildlife, and natural attractions, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is a must-see destination while visiting Mongolia.

Plan your visit

The busy season is from June to October when temperatures are warmer, snow has melted, and tour camps and shuttles are operating. The busiest time is August and September when the weather is best for mountain climbing. Also around the eagle festivals when tourist add a trip to the countryside. Though the park is still accessible year round with activities like snow skiing and eagle hunting during the cold winter months.

Altai Tavan Bogd is 180 km from the provincial capital of Ölgii. You will have to start in the city unless you are going with a tour operator that gets the permits in advance. It will take 7 hours with stops (5 hours non-stop) due to the rough, non-existent roads, high mountain passes, and lack of bridges, though a very scenic drive. Most visitors to the park go as part of a tour group or with a guide, though plenty go without one. A trip to the park should be at least 5 days, 7 to visit the mountains and glacier.
