The Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region of Morocco is the northernmost, and contains many stunning landscapes. It stretches along the Mediterranean coast, with mountain ranges in the interior. The region is home to a variety of cultures and languages that combine to create a rich culture. Two popular places for tourists to visit are Chefchaouen, a picturesque town known as "the blue pearl" due to its blue-hued architecture, and Tangier, Morocco's gateway to Europe. Tangier has been an important port city for centuries; it was once part of an international zone from 1923 until 1956 and was home to many spies during World War II. There are also several historical sites in Al Hoceima such as Sultan Moulay Ismail Mausoleum and Marshan Palace which both feature intricate Islamic architecture. Lastly, there are numerous archaeological sites located throughout the province that showcase ancient cultures such as Phoenician, Berber and Roman remains.
