The Ayeyarwady River, also known as the Irrawaddy, is a major river in Myanmar. It is the longest river in the country and flows through many important cities before emptying into the Andaman Sea. The river is an essential waterway for both tourism and transportation.

For tourists, there are several great places to visit along the Ayeyarwady River. Mandalay, located near its upper reaches, is known for its religious sites and cultural attractions such as U Bein Bridge - the world's oldest teak bridge - as well as Mahamuni Pagoda and Kuthodaw Pagoda. Further downstream lies Pyay (formerly Prome) which also has a number of historic Buddhist temples to explore.

A fascinating historical fact about the Ayeyarwady River is that during British colonial rule it was referred to as "the Sirhind Canal" after an irrigation canal built by Sir John Shore in 1795-1797 at Kyun Pin Chaung near Pyay (Prome). Today, this still remains one of Myanmar's most important waterways and continues to be relied upon by locals who depend on it for their livelihoods.
