Old Bagan, Myanmar

The Shwesandaw Pagoda is a Buddhist pagoda located in Bagan, Myanmar. It is the tallest pagoda in Bagan, and contains a series of five terraces, topped with a cylindrical stupa, which has a bejewelled umbrella (hti). The pagoda was built by King Anawrahta in 1057, and once contained terra cotta tiles depicting scenes from the Jataka. Enshrined within the pagoda are sacred hairs of Gautama Buddha, which were obtained from Thaton.

Plan your visit

  1. Wear comfortable shoes as Shwesandaw Pagoda is quite large and there are a lot of steps to climb.
  2. Bring plenty of water and snacks with you to stay hydrated throughout your journey up the pagoda.
  3. Wear sun protection, such as a hat, sunglasses, or sunscreen if visiting during the summertime when the heat can be overwhelming in Bagan’s dry climate.
  4. Avoid talking too loudly at Shwesandaw Pagoda; remember that it is a religious site and should be respected accordingly!
  5. Make sure to take lots of pictures while exploring this historic structure - capture moments at each level for an unforgettable experience!
