Discover Mawlamyine

438.9 thousand

Mawlamyine is a city located in south-eastern Myanmar, by the banks of the Salween River. It is the fourth largest city in Myanmar and has a population of around 300,000 people. Located near Thailand and with easy access to Bangkok via ferries, it has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists over recent years. The city has been at times described as 'the Venice of Burma' due to its many canals that wind their way through the busy streets and old colonial architecture.

One of Mawlamyine's main attractions is Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, believed to date back to 573 AD and now one of the most important religious sites in all of Myanmar. The pagoda sits on top of a hill overlooking Mawlamyine and offers spectacular views out across the region. Other must-see sights include Strand Road which runs along the riverfront lined with beautiful colonial buildings, U Zina monastery filled with stunning murals depicting scenes from Buddhist mythology and Monastic Hill where you can explore shrines devoted to various Hindu gods like Lord Shiva or Ganesh .
