The Shwedagon Pagoda is a majestic sight in Myanmar and one of the most significant religious sites in South East Asia. It stands tall at over 98 meters, covered with 60 tons of gold leaves, decorated with diamond encrusted stupas and thousands of precious stones. Visitors can explore its many terraces filled with shrines, monuments and stupas, each different from the last. On the grounds they will find towering monasteries as well as a museum featuring arts and antiques related to Buddhist worship. The most impressive view can be seen atop of U-min Thonze Pagoda where one can also admire the four Buddhas enshrined there. Make sure to head up for sunset for a truly breathtaking experience!

Plan your visit

When visiting Shwedagon Pagoda, there are a few tips and tricks to make your experience even more enjoyable. First, dress modestly - shorts and tank tops should be avoided and women must cover their shoulders. Second, bring plenty of water as the site is quite hot during the day and dehydration is common. Third, wear comfortable shoes because you will do a lot of walking up stairs around the pagoda’s grounds. Fourth, be ready for lots of photo opportunities! Last but not least, pay respect to locals by avoiding loud conversations or taking pictures without permission from temple guardians or monks. Enjoy this unique cultural attraction with these helpful tips!
