Visit Gisborne

Gisborne is a coastal city on the shores of Poverty Bay in New Zealand. It is the first city in the world to see the sunrise each day, earning its nickname "The City of Sunshine." Gisborne offers tourists plenty to explore such as beautiful beaches, hikes through lush green forests, spectacular sea views and many local wineries.

Two must-visit spots while exploring Gisborne are Eastwoodhill National Arboretum and Kaiti Hill Lookout. Eastwoodhill National Arboretum is 131 hectares of native forest with over 4500 species of trees and plants from around the world. Kaiti Hill Lookout provides an amazing view over Poverty Bay.

One interesting historical fact about Gisborne is that it was home to one of the most significant encounters between two cultures - Maori people and Europeans - when Captain James Cook landed in New Zealand here back in 1769
