The Carazo region of Nicaragua is an area of beautiful landscapes and culture. Located just south of Lake Managua, it's known for its stunning views of the volcanic chain that runs along Nicaragua's western border. The province is home to a variety of attractions, from ecological parks such as Laguna Apoyo Nature Reserve to colonial towns like Jinotepe and Diriamba. Tourists can also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in the region's lush natural surroundings, including hiking, swimming, cycling, bird watching and fishing.
One popular attraction in Carazo is the San Jacinto Church in San Marcos de Colon. This historic church dates back to 1737 and contains a host of religious artifacts from the colonial period. Another must-see spot is El Salto Waterfall near Diriamba; this spectacular cascading waterfall plunges over 200 meters into a stunning canyon below.
An interesting historical fact about Carazo province is that during the Nicaraguan Revolution (1979-90), Sandinista rebels actually defeated General Anastasio Somoza Debayle in Carazo during their march on Managua - ultimately leading to his resignation later that year!
