Leon is the second-largest city in Nicaragua and located near the northwestern coast of Managua. It's known for its history, culture, art and architecture, making it a popular destination for visitors to the country.

One of the most popular sites is the Leon Cathedral, which dates back to 1747. This impressive church features an impressive baroque interior with five altars decorated with gold leaf carvings and stained glass windows. The bell tower offers spectacular views over Leon and Lake Managua.

Another favorite attraction is Xolotlan Lagoon Nature Reserve near Leon. Here visitors can explore nature trails filled with lush vegetation as well as numerous species of birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish that inhabit this area.

Historically speaking, Leon was once home to many revolutionary leaders who fought against Spanish occupation in 1811 during Nicaragua's independence movement led by Jose de San Martin y Arguello, who declared his freedom from Spain at a mass held in front of the cathedral on September 15th that year. From then until 1979 it served as Nicaragua's capital before it was moved to Managua after a devastating earthquake hit both cities in 1972.
