The Madriz region of Nicaragua is located in the northern part of the country, and borders Honduras. The capital city is Somoto. This region is known for its breathtaking landscapes and great variety of wildlife such as the endangered primate species spider monkey.

A visit to Madriz will offer plenty of activities for visitors to enjoy - from exploring natural attractions like Bosawas Biosphere Reserve to discovering historical sites like El Castillo, a colonial fortress from 1747 that overlooks Ocotal town. Visitors can also check out Somoto Canyon, an impressive canyon featuring jagged cliffs alongside aqua-colored pools suitable for swimming.

One notably interesting fact about this region is that it was once part of "La Gran Costa" (Great Coast), which was a strip of land extending from Colombia all the way to Nicaragua where Spanish conquistadors explored during their conquest in the 16th century.
