Visit Nueva Segovia

The Nueva Segovia region of Nicaragua is known for its beauty and culture. It's located in the north-central part of the country, bordering Honduras. This province has a rich colonial history, and it is said to have been the birthplace of Nicaraguan independence.

The main tourist attractions are El Pantano de Arenal National Park and Laguna de Apanas Natural Reserve. Both offer visitors breathtaking views and a chance to explore unique wildlife, as well as unusual plants. At El Pantano de Arenal National Park you can enjoy activities such as kayaking, fishing or birdwatching; while at Laguna de Apanas Natural Reserve visitors can observe migratory birds from across Central America, including endangered species like Scarlet Macaws.

One interesting historical fact about Nueva Segovia is that during colonial times it was an important stop over for merchants traveling between Nicaragua and Honduras due to its strategic location on the San Juan River. The city of Ocotal was even declared 'Heroic City' in 1856 by President William Walker because it held off several attacks from Honduran forces at the time which saved Nicaragua from invasion!
