The Rio San Juan region of Nicaragua is a paradise for travelers and nature lovers. This lush and vibrant region is home to thick rainforests, wildlife-rich wetlands, soaring volcanoes, coffee plantations, and winding rivers with endless possibilities for exploring. Two popular locations to visit in the Rio San Juan region are the Casa Blanca National Wildlife Refuge--home to toucans, sloths, monkeys, macaws and other native birds--and El Castillo which was built by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1685 as a defensive stronghold against British pirates. An interesting historical fact about this area is that it serves as the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica; It was once part of what used to be Granada Colony before it separated into current day Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
