Niamey, located in the Sahel region of Niger, is a bustling city located on the Niger River. As the capital of Niger, Niamey serves as an important political and cultural hub for the country and its people. Tourists visiting Niamey will enjoy its vibrant markets and unique attractions like W National Park, which features a wide variety of wildlife. In addition to its natural splendour, Niamey also has many historical sites for visitors to explore. These include the Grand Mosque of Niamey, built in 1978; Le Pont des Martyrs monument, which memorializes fallen soldiers from World War I; and The Convent de la Missionnaires de Notre Dame d'Afrique (a convent founded by French nuns in 1892). One interesting historical fact about Niamey is that it was once called "Gouderi" by ancient tribes who lived in the area before it became a French colony in 1898. After being designated as Niger's capital city in 1926, it was then renamed to "Niamey".
