Visit Oyo State


Oyo State is one of the 36 states that make up Nigeria. Located in the South West region of the country, it is bordered by Kwara, Osun, Ogun and Lagos states. This state covers an area of 28,454 km2 with a population estimated to be over 6 million people. It's capital is Ibadan which is also its largest city. Oyo state has a diverse culture reflecting its history as one of the most important cultural centers in Africa during the 19th century. Tourist attractions include Old Oyo National Park, known for it's ancient ruins; Agodi Gardens-a lush oasis surrounded by water fountains and picnic spots; and Erin- Ijesha Waterfalls - seven tiered waterfalls located in a dense forest area with amazing backdrop views perfect for photography.

An interesting historical fact about the region includes that it was once part of an Empire called Old Oyo founded in 1650 by an ancestor chief called Oranyan who was installed as king from Ife and was initially made up of city-states before being unified into one political entity under King Abiodun around 1800 CE .
