Visit Sokoto State

Sokoto State is one of the 36 states in Nigeria located in the North-Western part of the country. It is bordered by Niger, Kebbi, Zamfara and Katsina states as well as Benin Republic. The state has diversified topography ranging from harsh desert to lush green vegetation inland. Sokoto prides itself on its rich cultural heritage with many traditional festivals celebrated throughout the year such as Sallah and Durbar.

Tourists visiting Sokoto will want to visit some of its famed historical sites including old palaces like those in Illela, Wurno and Gudu districts which are testament to ancient African architecture; or explore some of the oldest mosques in West Africa such as Sultan Bello Mosque built over 600 years ago! For outdoor lovers there's Suru National Park, a wildlife reserve where you can embark on safari tours and go bird watching.

An interesting historical fact about Sokoto State is that it was formerly a Sultanate City-State ruled by various Islamic Caliphates who wielded tremendous political influence across West Africa during 18th century until 1903 when it fell into British hands after a series of wars known as Anglo-Sokoto Wars.
