Visit Polog


The Polog region of North Macedonia is a diverse and fascinating part of the country, with plenty to explore. Located in the northwest corner near Kosovo, it's a great jumping-off point for discovering the rest of the country. From its bustling urban centers to its tranquil rural areas, this area is full of surprises.

Popular tourist attractions in Polog include St Jovan Bigorski Monastery, established in 1020 and home to many Byzantine frescoes; Kuklica Rock Formations, an array of strange rock formations naturally sculpted by wind and water erosion; and Galicica National Park which offers some wonderful hiking trails as well as stunning views across Lake Ohrid.

As for historical facts, Polog was once known as Dardania and was part of the Roman province until it was taken over by Serbia during the Middle Ages. Later on it became part of Yugoslavia until becoming independent following the dissolution in 1991. Today it remains a vibrant part of North Macedonia with many cultural influences from both East and West visible throughout this captivating region.
